Key Deadlines Explained

31 January 2025 – Self Assessment Filing & Payment

This is one of the most important dates in the tax calendar. You must:

  • File your Self Assessment tax return online
  • Pay any outstanding tax for the 2023/24 tax year
  • Pay your first payment on account for 2024/25
tax return

If you’re self-employed, a landlord, or a director with untaxed income, this applies to you. You can read more about this on the HMRC website here. Need help? King and Taylor can prepare and submit your return on time.

5 April 2025 – End of the Tax Year

The 2024/25 tax year closes on this date. It’s your last chance to:

  • Use your annual tax allowances
  • Maximise pension contributions
  • Take advantage of any allowable expenses

6 July 2025 – P11D Filing

If you provide company benefits like a car or medical insurance, you’ll need to submit P11D forms for each relevant employee, as well as a P11D(b) for Class 1A NICs.

31 July 2025 – Second Payment on Account

If your Self Assessment tax bill was over £1,000 last year, you likely need to make a second advance payment for the current year.

5 October 2025 – Register for Self Assessment

Starting your self-employed journey this year? You must register with HMRC by this date to avoid penalties.

Ongoing Monthly/Quarterly Deadlines

  • VAT Returns – Usually due every quarter (7 days after the end of the month following the VAT period)
  • PAYE/NIC Payments – Due by the 22nd of each month if paid electronically
  • Corporation Tax – Due 9 months and 1 day after the end of your company’s accounting period
